Welcome to Brighton independent Press. We’re a small, independently owned, family operated book publishers based in Brighton (obviously), where the peaceful coast and vibrant community provide a great home for our headquarters.
We’re proud to be
Family operated
Queer owned
Neurodiverse
Supportive of disabled, BIPOC, and socio-economically disadvantaged writers to represent a wide range of lived experiences
Backed by an incredible community of readers, writers and creatives who help us keep doing the work we do to make publishing fair and accessible to all.
A fair and transparent partner for authors. We believe writing is work, and authors should get a fair compensation for that work. We won’t trick you with complicated contracts or shady small print.
Debut author friendly – no matter where you are in your writing journey, we want good stories from good writers, and we don’t mind if you haven’t got an agent or you’ve never been published before.
We operate on two simple core values: to make publishing accessible to all writers, and make reading accessible to all readers.
When we say “all”, we mean it. We want everyone to be able to enjoy reading and writing regardless of their background or stage in their reading/writing journey.
Our mission statement is to help make publishing more accessible to all. It’s our genuine belief that everyone can tell a good story, but traditional publishing with big publishers has barriers that are insurmountable to many authors.
As an independent publishing house, there’s nobody tugging our strings. We’re free to set our own rules and publish stories that mean something to us and to our readers, and explore the richness of human life. We want to hear real stories from real people that reflect real experiences, and play a part in getting those stories out into the world and into the hands of readers.
As a queer owned publisher with a neurodiverse team of dyslexic individuals, autistic individuals and people with ADHD, we want to help underrepresented writers navigate the difficulties publishing often poses, especially for neurodivergent people. That’s why we believe in a clear, simple and transparent process of submissions, tried and tested by our community to ensure we remain a neurodivergent friendly publisher.
If you like what you’ve seen so far and you think you’ve got a story to tell, head to our Submissions Page to share your manuscript. You don’t need an agent to contact us, and we don’t mind if this is your first book or your fifth!
In addition to making publishing accessible to authors, we want to make reading more widely available to everyone. We’re on a mission to create a new kind of reading experience that bridges the gap between readers and authors for a personalised reading journey that allows you to feel more deeply connected to the work.
Using our content panel system, we make it easier to choose books that suit your reading taste. Our stories include content warnings as well as an estimated average reading time per work and by chapter, to help readers make informed choices about their reading. Each chapter also includes a message from the author about the work that helps to provide a deeper insight into the thoughts, feelings and motivations of the story.
We think reading is a joy that everyone should have, which is why we aim to keep our pricing fair whilst still giving our authors a good deal. We operate across eBooks and physical print editions, so you can read in whatever way suits you. We aim to create our books in fonts that are dyslexia friendly to ensure everyone can access our books. Whilst we’d like to offer books in an audiobook format to make catalogue of stories even more widely accessible, we currently do not have the capabilities but hope to offer this option in future.
You can purchase our books as both eBooks and print editions, and our website accepts multiple payment formats including Google and Apple Pay. Alternatively, you can buy our stories as eBooks though various eBook apps on mobile, tablet or eReader.
If you prefer a personal touch or even just want to say “hello!” then you’re welcome to come find us on market days in Brighton, where you’ll find our team on most weekends running our stall. More details will be on our Instagram page.
Can’t get down to see us? Say “hey!” on social media instead.
We’re operated by a small team of hard workers who keep Brighton Independent Press running, as well as a handful of our community volunteers who support us in our mission.
Our Managing Director. Petra is in charge of… well, everything. Brighton Independent Press is her vision, and she oversees everything from business partnerships to our processing from manuscript to printed book. You’ll usually catch her running our market stall on weekends alongside our other sales staff.
Sylvester is our head of art and illustration. He handles all enquiries related to illustration and takes the lead on all cover art and design for our publications, ensuring the artwork is reflective of the story and the author’s vision whilst still aligning with our signature house style. Vester is Petra’s partner, and they run Brighton Independent Press together. Wherever you can find Petra, you can normally find Vester not far behind.
Cait is one of our volunteer commissioning editors who reviews submissions with us. She’s also a marketing, SEO and PR consultant who ensures new readers find out about us, so if you’re new here, give her a shout out!
Cam is our tech genius who keeps our website running. They handle adding new stories to our website and making sure essential systems like our checkout and payment process are all working properly. You won’t usually catch Cam out and about with us at markets, but they’re here, behind the scenes… slowly pushing a stack of code…
